Over the past few years, grocery stores have increased space for organic foods. This could have been only for marketing purposes. But if more and more people try to access sustainable, delicious ingredients, it’s because there is a real need to eat and live greener. As parents, we want a better, healthier future for our kids. Showing and teaching children better food habits is actually one of our mission with Teuko, one lunchbox at a time. Making the choice of organic food when affordable is a great step to reduce our impact on the Planet, but it’s also important for our kids’ gut health. Here are the reasons why.
1. Fewer pesticides and chemicals
Sourcing sustainable, delicious ingredients from local farmers is an important step we should pay more attention to. Organic farming practices, indeed, avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, which can be harmful to the gut microbiome. Learn more in our article “About the Gut Microbiome and Foods to Support Your Kid’s Health“. Chemicals can disrupt the balance of gut bacteria, leading to inflammation and other digestive problems. Thus, if you can make the choice of organic foods, you may get fewer pesticides and chemicals. In any way, organic or not, never ever forget to wash your fruits and veggies under clear water before cooking!
2. More diverse nutrients
Organic foods tend to be more nutrient-dense than conventionally grown foods. This means that they contain a wider variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that can support the health of the gut microbiome. You can even taste the difference. And no wonder why Michelin-starred chefs source their ingredients from trusted farmers and ranchers! While our children don’t require to cook at that level, they would nonetheless be pleased to get a tasty lunch that, at the same time, would help them stay healthy. In all cases, always try as much as possible to encourage your child to “eat the rainbow” for even more nutrients to offer to their tummies.
3. Less antibiotic resistance
Organic farming practices prohibit the routine use of antibiotics in animals, leading to antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can harm the gut microbiome. At a time when emerging mRNA technology is likely to be the new source of vaccines for livestock, due to unknown side effects in animals destined for human consumption and the lack of long-term studies, it may be better to eat organic meat. Once again, check where your food is sourced, and if you can get it from a local farm. If you can get to know the rancher’s practices about the cattle, for instance, that would be the absolute best. You could ask if vitamins and minerals are available in the grass the cattle consume on the home ranch, if it is sufficient to meet their nutritional needs for optimal health, or simply if their cows and their calves are happy.
4. More probiotics
Organic foods, especially fermented foods such as yogurts, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles, or miso, are often produced using fermentation techniques, which can increase the number of beneficial bacteria, the probiotics, in the food. These probiotics can support the health of the gut microbiome. It’s important to note that not all fermented foods will contain probiotics, as the bacteria can be destroyed during processing or cooking. It’s also important, if possible, to choose organic versions of these foods to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals that can negatively impact gut health.
So, to put it in a nutshell, organic food can support our kids’ gut health by providing more diverse nutrients, reducing exposure to harmful chemicals, and promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria. Keep on preparing delicious lunches with various foods, and, for sure, your children’s tummies will be happy!
